Rain Dog: Robert Carlyle - a tribute to the Scottish actor Robert Carlyle

Welcome to the original source for the amazingly talented Scottish actor Robert Carlyle. The site has been up since the summer of 2003 and has brought you the latest on Mr. Carlyle's career. You might know Robert from the movies such as Trainspotting, The Full Monty, Ravenous, The 51st State, 28 Weeks Later, the series SGU Stargate Universe and the upcoming Once Upon A Time. Enjoy your stay!

‘Once Upon a Time’: Season 1 Blu-ray & DVD Release

Once Upon A Time starring Jennifer Morrison, Jared Gilmore, Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Dallas, Robert Carlyle and Lana Parrilla took ABC and Sunday nights by storm in its first season. The fairytale drama has been a huge ratings hit with around 10 million viewers per episode, enough so that ABC is going against their stance of not releasing television series on Blu-ray to make an exception.

I can now confirm that Once Upon A Time: Season 1 is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on August 28. The set will span five discs and include all 22 episodes presented in 1080p video and 5.1 lossles audio.

The Once Upon A Time: Season 1 Blu-ray bonus features include the following. Some features will be exclusive to Blu-ray, but I’m not certain which ones yet.

  • Fairy Tales In The Modern World
  • Tell Me A Story
  • Building Character
  • Noble Creatures
  • Audio Commentaries
  • Bloopers
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Easter Eggs

‘Assignment X’ Interview – April 8, 2012

Even one more interview for us to enjoy!

ABC’s freshman hit ONCE UPON A TIME, Sundays at 8 PM, is unlike anything else currently on television. Created by its show runners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, ONCE posits that the curse of the Wicked Queen (Lana Parrilla) has deposited all of the inhabitants of Fairytale Land – Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), Jiminy Cricket (Raphael Sbarge), the Magic Mirror (Giancarlo Esposito) et al – in our world’s town of Storybrooke, Maine, a picturesque community where nothing ever changes.

Due to the curse, the inhabitants have no memory of their former selves and don’t realize that there’s anything odd in the fact that they don’t age and no one can leave town. Then bounty hunter Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) comes to town and things begin to change.

Although the premise is unconventional, it’s played straight. However, one standout character is the richest man in town, Mr. Gold, who in the Fairytale world is Rumpelstiltskin. Both are played by Robert Carlyle in a performance that is alternately fey, terrifying, hilarious, touching and ever-surprising.

Express (UK) Interview – April 8, 2012

New interview with Robert!

SMASH hit TV series Once Upon A Time has turned into a fairytale success for its star Robert Carlyle.

The most watched new drama series of the year in America, and a hit here too following its high-rated debut on Channel 5 last Sunday, the storybook show has brought him even more satisfaction than such past triumphs as Trainspotting, The World Is Not Enough and The Full Monty.

“I’m very, very pleased,” says the 50-year-old Glaswegian. “I had a lot of big successes way back in the past, a lot of big films, but I didn’t even think about it at the time. It was just ‘Move on, move on, move on’ but Once Upon A Time is going crazy and I’m enjoying this.”

Part of that pleasure comes from the fact that his role in the show as Rumpelstiltskin is a part he has waited 44 years to play.

“He was the first character I remember seeing on stage. I was a six-year-old boy in Glasgow when a travelling theatre group came to town to do a version of it and there was something about that very different character, from his name to his story, that stayed with me and fascinated me. I didn’t care about the king, the daughter or the gold, just Rumpelstiltskin, and it’s a dream to play him now.”

“Reality TV makes me sick”

Robert Carlyle has hit out at reality TV shows, saying they are killing off drama.

The Trainspotting and Full Monty star told Radio Times that Big Brother should have been a one-off.

“Reality shows make me sick,” he said. “I remember many years ago thinking the first Big Brother was amazing; but it should never have happened more than once.

“Those people in that first show had no idea what was going on outside, didn’t adjust their behaviour accordingly. Now they’re all doing that so you don’t get any sense of real people at all. It’s the death of drama.”

Robert said becoming a father had changed his approach to roles.

“There are certain parts nowadays that I would turn against. If I had to play someone who was harming children, I couldn’t do that. In the past I would have done anything,” he said.

The Scottish star now lives in Canada and has no intention of returning any time soon.

“At this point in my life I’m happy here in Vancouver, although I miss a lot of stuff culturally and I feel for the people back home just now because I know that the country’s been through some pretty tough times,” he told the magazine.

Strand Releasing Acquires Sundance’s ‘California Solo’

California Solo stars Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) as a former Britpop rocker-turned-farm worker who is charged with DUI, leading to possible deportation after living in Los Angeles for two decades. Marshall Lewy wrote and directed the film, which played at Sundance this year. Alexia Rasmussen, Kathleen Wilhoite, A Martinez, Michael Des Barres, and Danny Masterson also star. Strand co-president Jon Gerrans negotiated the deal with Ryan Kampe of Visit Films. The Culver City-based distributor plans a fall theatrical release. Strand’s 2012 slate includes Athina Tsangari’s Attenberg, Braden King’s Here, Joachim Trier’s New Directors/New Films feature Oslo August 31st and Andre Techine’s Unforgivable.
